So I got the crazy idea that I could make a stuffed animal. More specifically I wanted to make a Plimpy Pine stuffed animal. Now Plimpy Pine is a porcupine and a pretty grumpy one at that. So on saturday my son Jacob and I went to the craft store and I picked up some felt and some yarn. I have never sewn anything in my life and really had no idea where to even start but I like to take on projects I have no idea what in the world I’m doing. I spent most of the rest of Saturday thinking about how I was going to execute my project. On Sunday I got up and got to work. I had knew I was going to use the yarn as the quills (even though they would not be sharp and would probably not look like quills) so I got Jake to start cutting them for me. Then I cut out an oval shape for the body of Plimpy and began to sew by hand every individual quill. THIS WAS TAKING FOREVER!!! Luckily my mother-in-law stepped in before to long and showed me a few tricks on the old sewing machine. This opened up a whole new world to me. I was able to apply all the quills to the body and tail in a much shorter amount of time. I would say the trickiest part of all was in figureing out how to make the nose and attach it to the body. Im not real happy with the face and nose but like I said this is only a first attempt. I also struggled with the arms and legs and how they should look and how to attach them and in the end they turned out pretty generic. Now originally I had planned on staying true to Plimpy Pine and make him grumpy, I had already made angry eyes for him, but in the end my sons ideas on stuffed animals won out. Jake said he didnt like it cause it had angry eyes and when I told him I was going to make a mad face he said ” Dad, what kid would want a mad stuffed animal?” So i ended up putting a small smile on the grumpy porcupines face and in the end it was the right thing to do because Jake ended up sleeping with it the entire night.

Day 3

The blog continues on and this one was a challenge because I couldn’t get anything I liked at first. Eventually after I go going I started to generate a few cool images which I could work with. Sometimes you just have to push yourself with these types of things. And garsh Im only three days into the blog.

Im really hoping by forcing myself to draw a new picture everyday even if its really simple I think its going to take my self reflective stream of consciousness drawings to the next level.

I like a few different aspects of the drawing like the bearded man and the bear creature. I also like the luche libre wrestler in the upper right corner.

Day 2 of the year long blog featuring a new drawing everyday.

I started this drawing out by drawing a triangle and I immediatley new I was going to draw a wizard hat and then I drew a large circle and I messed around with the nose a lot and the eyes. The whole drawing style is determined by the way the eyes and especially the nose turn out. From that I usually have an idea of what the picture is going to look like and then I just go from there.

The fingers are long and and so are the arms giving it a very distorted look. I love to draw the beard and any hair in a very stylized fashion.

And for some unknown reason I have begun to draw strawberries.

So here it is!!! The first drawing in a new blog I am doing. I am going to blog a drawing everyday for a year. The drawings are going to just be real spontaneous and more like a stream of conciuosness. In doing so I hope to try and uncover a little about myself and my art.

So this first one is kinda funny I started with the boots and then up to the legs. I drew about three different kinds of eyes until I settled on the one above which then gave me the idea to make it some kind of horse or ass. A lot of times I incorporate text in the drawing that came from a conversation I or someone else was having while I was drawing. And then came the little bird who is shouting at the ass.

I think the drawing of the little birdie yelling at the ass is from today when I was at work and was struggling a little and felt as though I was not doing a good job and felt like my boss might yell at me.

Sometimes I will hit a painting snag. This is when painting is just not working for me the way I would like it to work. It almost makes painting not as fun as it should be. I go up to my studio and my heart starts to race because I am so anxious about what I am going to paint. I know it is all in my head but I start to really worry that I am not going to be a painter anymore. Right now I have been thinking so much about what I should be painting (what I really mean “is anyone going to like this” ) and start to panic and worry that I am not as good a painter as I think I am or that I used to be. Life can always get in the way and unfortunately I feel like I have let it. I am always concerned that I have not put in the effort needed to become a great painter. Then someone will stop me and tell me they looked at my site and they like them all but their favorite is the boat or one of the landscapes and then I start to think that I need to start painting more of those types of paintings and then I start to really freak out in my studio because I only do those types of paintings when i am in the mood to do those types of paintings. But then again I usually can only paint the type of painting I am in the mood to paint so really I should not have anything to freak out about. But then I start to think I need to stay true to who I am and should paint the things I draw which are more often then not the weird cartoon things. Boy oh Boy what a hot mess I am. I dont know what to do so I am writing all this out inhopes of in making me feel better but now my fears are just more real. I dont know maybe this snag will go away if I just continue to paint which is what I have been doin for the last few days.

However I can only call it a snag until it turns into a rip and then I will really be in trouble.

So I have not blogged in a while again but dont worry I have been spending a lot of time reading up on how it is a really good idea to blog and blog consistantly. I have been researching and researching social networking and its usefulness and how to do it and why its important and new and exciting ways to network socially. I have litterally spent hours and hours looking up stuff on the subject and I know I have only but stepped foot into the rabbit hole. There is so much on the web about everything you could ever want to know about. I feel totally overwhelmed when it comes to this overwhelming subject. But I continue and I enjoy learning about it and I feel pressed to press on with my online presssence and gain some ground in generating more visits and clicks and likes and followers and all that baloney. I know this is a rambling of rambles. I have been so addicted to researching social networking and the likes that I spent little time doing any actual art but that is okay I have been a real head case when it comes to my art and it only gets worse when I am up in my studio. So instead I am going to try something a little different. I dont know who actually reads this blog post anymore but I am going to give anyone who responds to this a huge discount on my self published book Jay’s World Volume #1. If you go on the blurb.com site and order one it will cost about $40.00 and believe me it is worth it but if you click on this link http://jaycrider.com/category/marketplace/ you will see a limited time offer to get the book for only $25.00 and that includes shipping. So I suppose we will see if this blog post has any relevancy to the world or not.
